Hotel San Giorgio Matera
A scattered 3-star hotel of cave rooms and suites in the Sassi of Matera, with a reception and in-room breakfast.
Why people love it
- Cave rooms. Guests praise spacious, clean rooms. One stayed in a mini cave room, and a June 2025 guest liked the shower with a water massage system.
- Helpful staff. Alessandra and her father, Pierluigi, Benny and Pierre are each named in reviews for dinner reservations, directions and going beyond what was asked.
- Breakfast in the room. Several guests describe an in-room breakfast. One said the fridge was restocked daily with breakfast and snack options.
- Location. Guests describe being in the middle of the Sassi, with restaurants close by.
The worst thing guests say
The most repeated practical problem is access. A June 2026 guest gave 3 stars because reception and room are 150 meters apart, which made it hard to move luggage. A March 2026 guest noted the Sassi cannot be reached by car and public parking is 500 to 900 meters away. In September 2025 a guest rated 2 stars because the pet-friendly listing did not match what they were given, and a March 2025 guest said parking was advertised but they were sent to paid lots; that guest cancelled.
Insider tips
- Park outside the historic center. One guest suggested the lot on Via Saragat and the public shuttle.
- Ask which room you have and how far it is from reception before you arrive with luggage.
- Confirm parking and pet policies directly before you book.
